In the beginning...
Hello everyone. My name is Frances Weir and I love fashion dolls. While I was late in discovering their very enchanting world, it has inspired me and has opened up new, exciting avenues for my own creative urges.
I have been knitting and sewing, especially for dolls, all my life, but what I enjoy now is the special sewing challenges of creating ooak couture doll fashions in 1:6 scale. And yes, the little, old 1949 Singer Featherweight sewing machine in the photo is the one I use. My mother taught me to sew on it and I love it still.
I have been a member of the Fashion Doll Club of Victoria and an online member of the "W" Club for Integrity Toys, 'Ebay', and 'Doll Observers' . I began selling my ooak doll fashions on Ebay, as 'dollia', in 2009. Now, most of my projects are commissioned by my many, new and old, wonderful Facebook doll friends, and I thank every one of them my for their many words of appreciation and encouragement.
My personal collection of dolls, while very small, includes Silkstone® , Fashion Royalty®, Poppy Parker®, and Momoko dolls and favourite, Mel Odom's lovely Gene®. My collection grows little by little, changing slowly over time. While I truly can appreciate doll lovers with NRFB collections, personally, I can never a leave a doll in her box. So, in my world, dolls usually arrive as resale nudes and live an elegant "Life on the Shelf", wearing silk robes designed to suit each of their distinctive personalities, and waiting their turns to model my latest fashions.
I enjoy going online to see what other doll lovers around the world are creating. I have discovered the most amazing collections, doll artists, fashions and accessories, wigs, shoes, furniture, dioramas photography, and videos. The talents of doll lovers are both endless and inspiring.
Please take a peek at my one of a kind doll couture in the Gallery. These 1:6 and 1:4 scale doll fashions are unique, sophisticated and stylish. The ensembles and separates are sewn and hand knit from my own original designs often in combination with pieces adapted from vintage sewing patterns or inspired by photographs.
Almost all of the clothing is sewn using pure silk, linen, cotton or wool fabrics; most accessories are made from repurposed finds and vintage materials. The classic hand knit dresses, sweaters, jackets and coats are crafted in either cashmere, merino wool, alpaca or bamboo/silk blend yarns.
Thank you for visiting Francesca Doll Couture ...
